2. The Boardwalk and Trá Mór

The Donegal Boardwalk (Formerly Cuan na Rí) Resort is located off the R940 between Creeslough and Carrigart. This beautiful walk can be combined with a visit to Doe Castle, and there is a bar and restaurant located at the start/finish point. The easy way to get there is from the N56 from Letterkenny towards Creeslough. About 1km before Creeslough village take the signposted right turn for Carrigart and Doe Castle R940. Continue on the R940 past the Castle viewing point and then look for the imposing gates of the Boardwalk Resort on your left. Drive slowly down past holiday chalets to the car park at the Boardwalk Restaurant.

  • Trailhead: Donegal Boardwalk car park. (Toilets available in the restaurant.)
  • Length: Boardwalk approx. 2km return. Beach extension can be varied according to ability and time available.
  • Time: Boardwalk 20-30 min. Beach walk varied as above.
  • Ascent: none
  • Note: On the return leg of the beach it is important to watch for the gap in the dunes that leads back onto the boardwalk, easily missed!!

Longer Variation

For the active walker this route can be extended to include Downings village. Walk to the end of Trá Mór and take the minor road past the golf clubhouse to turn left onto the R248. Continue into Downings where there is a choice of cafes (I myself like The Galley opposite the Beach Hotel). It will take about one hour to reach Downings at a good pace so allow two and a half hours for the return trip, including a lunch/coffee stop.
